first concert I've ever left early
First, the venue: MGM Northfield Park... I'm not a fan of casinos, but we won't hold that choice against anyone. The staff - security and ushers - were efficient, professional, and super friendly. The seating was uncomfortably snug, and the acoustics sounded messy. As seems true for most other music events today too, the sound engineers must have lost their hearing years ago.
We've been fans of Joe Satriani for decades, the man and his recorded music. We were therefore not prepared for a noisy guitar wankfest in which EVERY song (in the first half, when we were present anyway) seemed unnecessarily doubled in length by his need to hold several crazy-long notes. Singing long notes, when appropriate, is impressive. Doing this over and over with a guitar only degrades what should have been great music, and does nothing to showcase the depths of Mr. Satriani's (or his band's) talents.
Normally I truly enjoy the ad lib nature of live music. That is after all a main point of attending a concert. In this case it seemed more like, "Let's produce a wild show of taking our own great music and not-so-subtly ruining it in uncreative ways."
We left at intermission, and came home to enjoy his music (including live recordings) on our own terms.
